The parameterization we use here corresponds to the following form of the characteristic function. However, the characteristic function can always be given. With the exception of the above 3 cases, the density function of an alpha-stable random variable cannot be given in closedįorm. (3) The Levy distribution (a.k.a Inverse-Gaussian or Pearson V), with scale and location is given by. (2) The Cauchy distribution with scale and location is given by. (1) The Gaussian distribution is given by. The family of alpha-stable distributions is a rich class, and includes the following distributions as subclasses: The variable is usually called a standard alpha-stable random variable (but keep in mind the word "standard" depends on the choice of parameterization!). One can think of these two as being similar to the variance and mean in the normal distribution in the following sense The last two parameters are the scale,, and the location. The second, is the skewness, and as the name implies, specifies if the distribution is right- ( ) or left- ( ) skewed. The first parameter is called the characteristic exponent, and describes the tail of the distribution. The alpha-stable distribution is a four-parameter family of distributions and is (usually) denoted by. Introduction to the alpha-stable distribution NOTE: Because MATLAB interprets "gamma" as the gamma function (which is used to compute the pdf an alpha-stable dist.), we We chose and as opposed to the popular and since these two letters usually mean standard deviation and mean (which is not accurate in the case of stable distributions). The letters and are used almost everywhere you look, while the other two parameters are almost always different. One further annoyance is that the names of the 4 parameters are also inconsistent. The most common way to specify a parameterization is to look at the characteristicįunction of the alpha-stable random variable, which we do in the next section. With G Samorodnitsky's and MS Taqqu's 1994 book. The parameterization we choose here is consistent One of the most frustrating issues in dealing with alpha-stable distribtuions is that its parameterization is not consistentĪcross the literature (there are over half a dozen parameterizations).

But if you're reaching for an early-'60s political commentary film, I'd stick with Dr. I am curious how well the 2004 remake of this film adapted the premise and I may give it a watch. Heh.įor that reason, the film exists in a gap between an aging relic of the Cold War and a relevant thriller for the modern age. But watching from today, I was awestruck by how adaptable the film was as a metaphor for what’s going on right now-at a base level, the film is about Russian indoctrination to influence a presidential election. Certainly, the film parallels JFK’s murder, the first of many American assassinations in the ‘60s. But by the end of 1963, audiences were apparently less focused on the brainwashing-element and more on its depiction of assassination. When the film came out in 1962, it reflected the fear of communism, witch hunting, and technological anxiety of the time. I think what I found the most fascinating about the film is how its flexible central theme has allowed the film to endure as a relevant story. On the other hand, sloppy coincidences, Janet Leigh’s confusing character Rosie, and an over-seasoned helping of ‘60s racism/sexism detracted from my full enjoyment of the flick. Shots like a rotating hypnosis-demonstration transition, the use of monitors to display action in static press conference scenes, less-comfortable, askew angles, and documentary-styled convention shots provided an enduring flair to this otherwise aging film. My favorite feature was the excellent and inventive camerawork. Iselin, and Frank Sinatra played a dazed drunk just too well. I enjoyed Laurence Harvey’s Raymond Shaw, Angela Lansbury absolutely rocked it as Mrs. The film has its strengths and its weaknesses. Major Bennett Marco (also a member of the captured platoon) begins piecing together what happened to them and works tirelessly to foil the Soviet plot before a major political assassination can occur. In reality, Shaw was the primarily brainwashing victim and now that he’s returned, he begins conducting a series of political murders at the subconscious prompting of the Soviets and a treasonous American operative. What a topical, surprising, and undeniably American choice! For those like me who didn't know, The Manchurian Candidate begins with the capture and brainwashing of a platoon of American soldiers in the Korean War. Knowing nothing about it but that it's a ‘political thriller’, I chose The Manchurian Candidate to be my 4th of July week movie.
